Christ clearly shows Himself to be God through words: No one can ascend to heaven except the Son of Man, who came down from heaven and is in heaven. But also the fact that he was sent by the Father, and the purpose for which the sending was done: “For God so loved the world that He gave His Son, the only-begotten, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.” A purpose must have astonished Nicodemus, who was undoubtedly filled with divine love at that moment.

The Bible tells us about Nicodemus that he was a Pharisee, a member of the Sanhedrin who stood among the chief priests and the charismatic. He came to Jesus in the night, led by the Spirit of the Lord.

Christ reveals to Nicodemus a dramatic reality, namely that although God has illuminated the world unceasingly through prophets, priests, and then in a perfect way through Christ, most people have chosen sin, darkness, and hated light so that their evil deeds would not be seen.
